Review: Hounded by Kevin Hearne

Title: Hounded
Author: Kevin Hearne

Atticus O’Sullivan, last of the Druids, lives peacefully in Arizona, running an occult bookshop and shape-shifting in his spare time to hunt with his Irish wolfhound. His neighbors and customers think that this handsome, tattooed Irish dude is about twenty-one years old--when in actuality, he’s twenty-one centuries old. Not to mention: He draws his power from the earth, possesses a sharp wit, and wields an even sharper magical sword known as Fragarach, the Answerer.

Unfortunately, a very angry Celtic god wants that sword, and he’s hounded Atticus for centuries. Now the determined deity has tracked him down, and Atticus will need all his power--plus the help of a seductive goddess of death, his vampire and werewolf team of attorneys, a sexy bartender possessed by a Hindu witch, and some good old-fashioned luck of the Irish--to kick some Celtic arse and deliver himself from evil

I am not ashamed to say that I usually, ok, almost never, read books that aren’t romance and/or don’t have a happily ever after. That being said, I totally loved this book even though it doesn’t have a drop of romance in it and you people have to read it! :D It’s the 1st novel in a of UF series, it has a male protagonist and it’s written by a male author, so there aren’t any weird descriptions of “azure eyes” or “shinning, blonde locks” as it sometimes happen when a woman writes a male’s POV.

I started the book because I wanted something with rich mythology mentions and I got my wish! It has, mostly, Celtic mythology and the gods walk the earth, it’s very well done and it shows how “other” they are. At the same time it has a slew of other PNR creatures: our MC(he’s the last of the druids), vampires, witches, werewolves, ice giants, fae and I am sure some other critters will make an appearance.

I have no idea how to properly express my love of the book so I made a list:
1. The dog! Oberon is the badass! He’s funny and loyal and has a thing for re-reacting characters from films he’s watched or historical figures from Atticus’ stories
“She's kind of like a Mary Poppins just before she turns to the dark side of the Force," Oberon said. He was still behind the counter, but he had a good look at her as she exited. "Let go of your anger, Malina! There's still good in you! The Emperor hasn't driven it from you fully!”
Oberon when he's excited(the one on the left :P)

2. Atticus! He’s an honest to god druid, and not the creepy, white wearing robe kind. He is over 2000 year old, kicks ass and has a great sense of humor

3. His lawyers. You don’t want to mess with them, they will eat you. Literally and figuratively :D
“Whoa. He had ghouls on speed dial. My lawyer kicks so much ass.”

4. The Goddesses. All of them are conniving and powerful and really know how to get what they want.
When you're in the middle of a killing field and the fucking Chooser of the Slain tells you to do something, you do it. [Regarding The Morrigan]

5. The humor.
“Are you telling me you're lawyer is a bloodsucking vampire?”

6. All the magical talk and all the paranormal creatures

7. The action scenes!

8. Atticus’s life. He isn’t like other ancient characters that was passed by history. I enjoyed hearing about important people or events from him

9. Atticus’ and Oberon’s conversations. You just have to trust me :D

10. The narrator. His accents were very good and so were the different characters' voices.

I don’t think there was a thing I disliked so if you’re looking for a great UF series pick this one up and you won’t be disappointed!
